As we enter flu season and continue battling Coronavirus, it’s more important than ever to stay healthy this winter.

Despite the prevalence of these viruses, steps can be taken to promote a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Focus on Nutrition

Ruben Morales, PT, DPT, CSCS, CWcHP, is a Physical Therapist and Certified Precision Nutrition Professional. Through our Wellness Program, he develops individualized health plans to help patients reach their goals following an injury or surgery.

In addition to getting the recommended amount of physical activity, our bodies need to be properly fueled. A diet that lacks the right nutrients can negatively affect the immune system and make us more susceptible to illness.

Foods that can boost immunity include:

  • Citrus
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Shellfish
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Green tea
  • Pomegranate juice

Exercise Regularly

Studies show regular physical activity may be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in both men and women. In terms of fighting off infection this year, moderate exercise may decrease the risk and duration of upper respiratory tract infections.

Exercise flushes bacteria from the lungs and can help create antibodies needed to fight disease. As the weather gets colder, consider indoor exercises like yoga, strength training and aerobics. Post-injury or surgery, work with our team to determine which activities are safe for you.

Clean & Disinfect

In addition to regular physical activity, wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds. Avoid large crowds and social distance in public spaces, like the grocery store or mall. In your home and workplace, regularly disinfect high touch surfaces.
