Innovative Training Method

Blood Flow Restriction is a safe, effective muscle strengthening therapy for injured or post-operative patients. A specially made cuff is used to restrict the amount of blood flow to the affected limb.
Blood Flow Therapy Certifiction

Lighter resistance principles are used to simulate the results of heavy lifting, without risk of muscle injury. Individuals are able to achieve results similar to high intensity training while using lower loads.

How to Become Certified in BFR

At Integrated Rehab, our physical therapists are certified by Smart Tools Plus, the company that developed instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) tools for BFR. There are Level 1 and 2 Blood Flow Restriction Courses available.

Attendees learn how to properly apply BFR techniques to help patients increase muscle strength. Physical therapists certified in BFR understand the benefits of Blood Flow Restriction training, how to safely use BFR cuffs and develop individualized training programs for injured or post-operative patients.

It’s important to work with a certified professional to ensure the right amount of pressure is applied by the cuff. The amount of pressure needed to safely restrict blood flow depends on the cuff width and size of the affected limb. While pressure needs to be high enough to temporarily stop venous return and allow blood pooling, it also needs to be low enough to maintain arterial inflow. If pressure from the BFR cuff is too high pressure, it can cause tissue damage. On the other hand, pressure that’s too low can make treatment ineffective.

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy can significantly improve post-surgical recovery time, treat muscle atrophy and increase athletic endurance.
