The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy™ was developed by New Zealand physical therapist Robin McKenzie in the late 1950’s. Featuring mostly self treatment strategies the McKenzie Method minimizes manual therapy procedures in the treatment of back and neck pain and operates with the belief that the best way for a patient to achieve lasting improvement is through self treatment. With an emphasis on prevention and intervention while encouraging patients to be in control of their own treatment this method is practiced by several physical therapists at Integrated Rehab.
Orna Levy in Norwalk, Susan Cavanaugh in Stamford and Americo Rodrigues in Tolland are all Certified MDT (McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy™). To be certified in this method, therapists must complete four courses, have a minimum of two years of clinical experience and pass a comprehensive written and clinical examination before being able to practice this active patient treatment. The McKenzie Method® is used to treat lower back pain and neck pain and uses a unique classification system for pain response patterns to accurately reach a diagnosis and initiate the appropriate treatment plan.
