In the world there are currently only 42 accredited teachers of the Mulligan Concept. A relatively new method of treatment that focuses on correcting altered arthrokinematics by mobilizing joints during active movement, the Mulligan Concept was founded by New Zealand physical therapist Brian Mulligan and since 1995, CEO of Integrated Rehabilitation Services, Julie Paolino, has worked closely with Mulligan using his manual techniques of “Mobilization with Movement”. Paolino was the first woman in North America to be certified by Brain Mulligan and the Mulligan Concept Teacher’s Association to teach his concept.
Being accredited as a Mulligan instructor and a member of the MCTA requires five years of relevant clinical experience, have International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMT) certification or equivalent post-graduate training in manual therapy and be a Certified Mulligan Practitioner. Paolino received her BS and Advanced MS in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac University and in addition to being MCTA certified she is also a Certified Athletic Trainer. She joined Integrated Rehab in 2001 when opening the clinic in Vernon and went on to open clinics in Manchester, Tolland and Ellington.
The Mulligan concept is used to treat a variety of injuries and pain including neck pain, back pain, upper and lower extremity injuries and degenerative spinal disorders. The manual therapy techniques used during Mulligan treatment apply a mobilization to the affected joint while the patient reproduces the painful or limited range of motion. After the treatment patients should be able to move the once painful or stiff joint with minimal to no pain and increased range of motion.
