We have 19 physical therapists who are Certified Mulligan Practitioners, including our International Mulligan Instructor, Julie T. Paolino. Why Mulligan Concept™?
This unique approach to manual therapy was discovered and developed by New Zealand physical therapist Brian Mulligan. The Mulligan Concept™ is a simple, yet effective approach to address musculoskeletal disorders. Pain-free manual techniques reduce soft tissue inflammation, induce relaxation and improve function.
Any patient with restricted motion caused by an orthopedic or joint issue, including arthritis, post-spinal surgery pain, headaches and dizziness, can benefit from Mulligan techniques. Brian Mulligan, , F.N.Z.S.P. (Hon), Dip. M.T. combined traditional sustained manual therapy techniques with patient-generated active movement to achieve pain-free motion and function.
Brian Mulligan’s concept of mobilizations with movement (MWMS) in the extremities and sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAGS) in the spine were revolutionary, due to the concurrent application of therapist-applied forces and patient-generated movement. Historically, manual therapy techniques were passively applied and did not include any patient active movement.
In addition to these manual techniques performed by the clinician, patients are also instructed on how to perform similar self-generated techniques to continue the success achieved during each session. A building body of evidence is now proving the efficacy of this approach for musculoskeletal conditions.
