Better, Stronger, Back to Work

Recovering from a work-related injury can be challenging, especially if your job is physically demanding. After time away from work, it’s common for strength, endurance and flexibility to decline. Our Work Conditioning Program bridges the gap between recovery and returning to work, helping you rebuild the physical capacity and confidence needed to perform your job safely.

What Is Work Conditioning?

According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), work conditioning is a work-related, intensive, goal-oriented treatment program specifically designed to restore an individual’s systemic, neuromusculoskeletal, and cardiopulmonary function.

At Integrated Rehab, our program helps individuals to return to their job efficiently and safely. We focus on improving strength, endurance, flexibility, motor control and cardiovascular health through work-specific exercise and movement-based therapy.

The Goals of Work Conditioning

The main objectives of a Work Conditioning Program are to:

  • Restore physical strength, flexibility and endurance
  • Enhance coordination and functional movement
  • Restore confidence in performing job duties
  • Prevent future injuries through proper body mechanics
  • Support a smooth, timely transition back to work

Physical therapy also plays a key role in workplace injury prevention through ergonomic assessments and body mechanics training. According to an Illinois study on lifting ability, 94.9% of patients met medium physical demand levels (lifting 50 pounds or more) and 45% met heavy demand levels (lifting 100 pounds or more).

Research from the Physical Therapy and Wellness Institute found that 96% of patients remained healthy for six months after finishing their program and 86% returned to work completely recovered.

Who Can Benefit from a Work Conditioning Program?

Work conditioning is ideal for people whose injuries have affected their ability to perform physical tasks on the job. It’s especially beneficial for workers in physically demanding roles, including:

  • Construction and trade work
  • Manufacturing and factory operations
  • Healthcare and emergency response
  • Transportation and warehousing
  • Office roles involving repetitive motion or extended sitting

Exercises Designed to Get You Back to Work Safely

No matter your occupation, work conditioning can help you overcome the physical challenges of returning to work after an injury. Functional work-related tasks that we may focus on include:

  • Pushing and pulling
  • Grip strength
  • Overhead work
  • Forward bending
  • Crawling
  • Kneeling and squatting
  • Stair and ladder navigation
  • Jumping

What to Expect During Your Program

Your journey at Integrated Rehab begins with a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed physical therapist. During your first visit, we’ll assess your injury, review your medical history, and discuss the physical demands, work hours, and task intensity of your specific role.

Your physical therapist may also test strength, range of motion, and functional abilities to identify areas for improvement and set goals for both your work and personal life.

Based on this assessment, we’ll create a personalized exercise plan designed to improve your current abilities and prepare you for a full return to work. Programs typically last 3 to 6 weeks and may include:

  • Strengthening Exercises: Rebuild muscle endurance and lifting power for carrying and other job-specific tasks.
  • Flexibility and Range of Motion: Reduce stiffness to support safe, efficient movement.
  • Cardiovascular Conditioning: Improve stamina and endurance for longer shifts or physically demanding tasks.
  • Motor Control and Coordination Drills: Refine balance, precision and overall body mechanics.
  • Job Simulation Activities: Practice real-world tasks like climbing, lifting and repetitive reaching.

Patients participate in 90 to 120-minute sessions, two to three times per week. Each session includes a warm-up of cardio and stretching before moving into functional training. All activities are individualized to your needs and the demands of your job.

Throughout the program, your physical therapist will closely monitor progress and adjust your exercises as needed to support continuous improvement while preventing re-injury.
