Sarah Cook is an avid runner. She finds that the activity brings stability, clears her mind and makes her more productive, as well as happier.
This year, Sarah finished her first half marathon at 41 years old! The accomplishment encouraged her to continue pushing her body to run longer and longer. However, these goals were soon sidelined by a back injury.
As someone who enjoys being active, Sarah was devastated. She went from running long distances one day to struggling to get off the couch the next. However, Sarah is no stranger to injury and knew she needed physical therapy treatment to get back on her feet.
“I knew who to call,” Sarah says. “I called Integrated Rehab and begged for the first available appointment!”
Although each step she took caused nerve pain, Sarah made it to her first appointment with Jenn Fritts. After assessing the injury, Jenn advised Sarah she was “catawampus”.
“Cata-what? Of course, I went home and tried to Google this term. I was gonna fix this immediately! There was little to no medical information available. It appears I was ‘askew,’ ‘awry’ or ‘misaligned,’” Sarah explains.
The back pain was so significant that, without knowing it, Sarah had shifted her whole torso. This affected her gait, as a result of the pelvic bone and hips locking. “I was lopsided!”
As they worked together over next few weeks, Sarah could feel her back pain dissipate as she performed movements which loosened her hips and ankles, lifted her shoulder and unlocked her foot arch.
“I listened. I worked hard. I learned just how much everything is connected. ‘To treat your back…let’s look at your feet?!’ I had my doubts. But I went from “catawampus” to walking upright and pain-free.
“I am a walking, talking commercial for this holistic approach to physical therapy. For Jenn, for the Integrated Rehab staff, for this unique form of treatment, I am grateful. Thank you!”
