mug of green tea with herb leaves

Arthritis is a family of medical conditions, characterized by joint inflammation, pain and stiffness. Medical treatments, regular exercise and proper nutrition can help people with arthritis manage their symptoms. Natural remedies are becoming more popular among those suffering with joint pain. Whether to supplement a current treatment program or as an alternative option, herbs are now considered a safe and effective way to help reduce joint pain. While research in the field of natural remedies is limited, test results have often shown promising results.

We list several herbs to use with our physical therapy treatment to help ease the pain of arthritis.

Borage Oil

The Borago officinalis plant has seeds that contain a significant amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). When the body metabolizes this omega-6 fatty acid, GLA converts into a precursor of prostaglandin, a signaling molecule that helps regulate the body’s immune response.

Blackcurrant seed oil and evening primrose oil may also relieve pain and improve function in people with rheumatoid arthritis. RA is an autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s tissues.

Eucalyptus

The oil distilled from eucalyptus leaves contain antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. The flavonoids and tannins in eucalyptus leaves also have antioxidant properties that may help reduce inflammation and pain. Eucalyptus extract can be found in stores as an essential oil.

Green Tea

Ongoing research has studied the effectiveness of green tea, but it has become one of the most popular beverages in the world. Green tea is used by many to reduce inflammation in the body and some research suggests it can be used to treat arthritis in the form of beverages, tablets or tinctures.

Other herbs that may alleviate inflammation and pain associated with arthritis include ginger, Aloe vera, Thunder god vine, Boswellia (also known as frankincense) and Cat’s claw.

Before taking herbal supplements, consult with a doctor or nutritionist. Some herbs can cause allergic reactions and should not be used in place of traditional medical treatments, prescriptions or physical therapy.
